click here for Matterlink performances Matterlink's vampling performances lie somewhere between the movie and concert experience. Working solo or collaborating with various musicians, he samples live from thousands of digitized film/video fragments both shot and found, playing the shots (or "vamples") from a midi-keyboard with the original sound attached. Each shot is played separately, he then loops, alters, and layers the the raw elements, creating sound and image-scapes punctuated by word and and song. Matterlink's focus is on the sound, the images follow along correspondingly. Prior to performing solo as Matterlink, Schneider vampled several years (2001-2004) with the electronica group formerly known as æ (Soniq) with Emiko Ota, Andrew Sharpley, and Thierry Negro (A lawsuit from Autechre forced them to change their name to Accident and Emergency). While continuing his solo performances, in January 2008 Matterlink began vampling alongside the Parisian electro-pop musician Elmapi. He had opened for her on a US tour in 2006. Their retro sci-fi sets alternate between the driving "pop-concrete" compositions and French vocals of Elmapi and the warped sounds & words of Matterlink's live-cinema.
